Marksman Itemization and Rune Changes
With the release of patch 8.11 for League of Legends, we see a reshape of marksman itemization and runes. 8.11 introduces new champions, AD items, and new item build paths. Some of the items from 8.10 were also updated. To see it in detail, check out the 8.11 patch notes.
Cost: 3200 gold
Build Path: BF + Dagger + Pickaxe + 725 gold
Stats: 70 Attack damage and 30% attack speed with unique passive (If you haven’t attacked in three seconds your next auto attack crits 160%) and gives 10% movement speed.
Who benefits from it: Marksmen that require time in between auto attacks such as Jhin. Caitlyn heavily benefits from the item but the build path should be BF Sword into Rapid Fire cannon then completing Stormrazor.
Infinity Edge (Updated)
Cost: 3700 gold
Build Path: Double BF sword + 1100 gold
Stats: 80 Attack damage with unique passive (doubles critical strike chance and converts 15% of your critical strike damage to true damage)
Who benefits from it: Marksmen that want scaling in the later stages of the game. You shouldn’t rush Infinity Edge like you did in patch 8.10. Wait until you have at least 60% critical strike chance before getting Infinity Edge for best use.
Essence Reaver (Updated)
Cost: 3200 gold
Build Path: B.F. Sword + Caulfield’s Warhammer + Sapphire Crystal + 450 gold
Stats: Unique passive (Basic attacks restore 1% of missing mana. After ulting, the next basic attack within 10 seconds grants 30% attack speed, having basic attacks to refund 20% of remaining non-ulti cooldowns)
Who benefits from it: Marksmen that want to spam abilities such as Lucian and Kog’Maw.
Lord Dominik’s Regard (Updated)
Cost: 2800 gold
Build Path: Pickaxe + Last whisper + 625 gold
Stats: 35% total armor penetration
Who benefits from it: Since it scales better with itself, any marksmen that face against armored tanks would benefit this heavily like the Last Whisper.
Mortal Reminder (Updated)
Cost: 2800 gold
Stats: 25% total armor penetration
Who benefits from it: Same with Lord Dominik but applies grievous wounds against an enemy team with significant healing. (Soraka, Vladimir, Mundo.)
Cloak of Agility is now removed but the Brawler’s Gloves are there to fill its shoes. The Brawler’s Gloves now cost 600 gold and its critical strike chance is now unique.
Zeal’s total cost is increased from 1200 to 1300. Its critical strike chance is now reduced from 20 to 15%. The Zeal is still a recommended item on many marksmen and some champions build it right after buying a BF Sword such as Sivir.
Rapid Fire cannon and Statikk Shiv cost 2900 gold with the build path of Kircheis Shard + Zeal + 800 gold. Runaan’s Hurricane has double Dagger + Zeal + 1000g in its kit and it also costs 2900 gold.
The cost for both Bloodthirster and Blade of the Ruined King is decreased by 200 gold. Bloodthirster costs 3500 gold and Blade of the Ruined King costs 3200 gold. Blade of the Ruined King is recommended on marksmen such as Lucian and Ashe as the first item. Draven works well with Bloodthirster.
How Challenger Marksmen Adapt to the Patch
I asked high elo National Leagues and TCL players how the patch affected them. They have been trying different build paths ever since the patch came out and here’s their input on how you can climb in this meta!
“The current AD meta is about one item spiking champions with good scaling. Right now I’d say the top 3 ads are; Kai’Sa, Varus, and Kog’Maw. As a whole it primarily champions that can abuse Guinsoo’s Rageblade since crit build isn’t very good until 3 items.”
“I think with Kai’sa and Varus, you should build AP (Guinsoo’s Rageblade, Nashor’s tooth and Rabadon’s Deathcap/Zhonya’s Hourglass) since they have really good scalings.”
“On Kog’maw the build should be Rageblade, Runaan’s Hurricane and Essence Reaver. People should avoid the bad AD items.”
“For my main runes, I use mostly Press the Attack or Fleet Footwork. However, Kleptomancy is still a must on Ezreal.”
“These changes are supposed to make bot lane and especially the marksman role more diverse by allowing non-crit champions to be played. Now that the crit build spikes too late it only makes champions that benefit from Rageblade more viable, an exception to this would be Lucian with Essence Reaver.”
“The current ad meta for me falls into three distinct groups of champs that are all strong in their own way:
- 1) Strong lane/mid game champs like Ezreal, Lucian, Kalista with Miss Fortune also seeing good success in some games.
- 2) Rageblade ad’s like Kaisa, Kog’Maw, Varus.
- 3) Insanely broken melee champs that should be balanced asap Yasuo/Irelia.”
“For me, my top three picks are Ezreal, Kog’maw, and Kaisa as they are just the champs that I have the most games on in the new patch. I’ve always loved Ezreal as he is mechanically intensive and right now. His two item spike, even after the nerf, is super strong with the bonus of being a solid champion even when your team is underperforming. As for Kaisa and Kog’maw, they just spike fast at one item and continue to have high damage throughout the game so can always be relevant unless stomped early.”
“In terms of items right now it varies quite a lot from champion to champion. For example, Ezreal is still the same with Manamune Triforce and a second tear item. Kaisa can go Rageblade and then choose crit or ap build path but at the moment ap wins out for me. Then in terms of other champions, they generally fall into crit or ap builds with the exceptions being Lucian going for both Cleaver Essence Reaver and also Kog’maw is a good user of the new Essence Reaver.”
